What are priorities and policies for access to UK resources for medical imaging?

Tony Gee, Gerald Greil, David Wyper, David Nutt, Nick Long

The use of a wide array of imaging modalities has been invaluable in advancing the understanding of normo- and pathophysiological processes, disease treatment and monitoring in living humans. Our objective is to facilitate research and training guided by clinical and basic questions and is aimed at novelty, understanding of physiology and pathophysiology as well as development of new diagnostic tools and therapies. Basic science can, in this way, be rapidly translated into clinical applications (and vice versa). The UK medical imaging infrastructure also aims at delivering a clinical diagnostic capability as well as research scanning capacity.

The community is working together to develop applications of imaging, especially Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Positron Emission Tomography (PET), and gamma imaging (Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT)). A high priority is placed on the development of novel imaging probes and their translation into the clinic for earliest patient benefit, especially in cardiovascular disease, cancer, immunology, skeletal disease and neurosciences.

It is recommended that a network of experts in the area of medical imaging be assembled to establish a critical mass of expertise with the aim to stimulate and create cross-laboratory national and European training / research programmes within this area (within and between modalities).
